Paramount grabs BYUtv’s Dwight In Shining Armor

The deal is expected to help the family net backed by the Church of Latter-day Saints gain a global audience for its non-religious original content for kids.

Paramount Worldwide Television Licensing & Distribution has secured the international distribution rights to Dwight In Shining Armor, an original adventure-comedy series from Provo, Utah-based BYUtv.

Paramount will begin shopping the series to buyers at the LA Screenings international television market this week. Created by LeeAnne H. Adams and Brian J. Adams (Amazon Studio’s 12 Princesses), Dwight In Shining Armor premiered in the US on BYUtv in March and will be followed by a second season this fall.

The 10 x half-hour scripted series stars Sloane Morgan Siegel (Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street) as a nerdy teenager whose life takes a turn when he falls into an ancient hole in the ground and awakens a princess (Caitlin Carmichael of The Good Doctor) who’s been magically asleep for 1,000 years.

Although it’s owned and operated by Brigham Young University and supported by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the majority of BYUtv’s original and acquired shows and movies are non-religious, clean programs for kids ages eight to 15 and their parents. Other new originals in its 2019 slate include family game show Battle of the Ages, cooking competition series Dinner Takes All and musical improv comedy Show Offs.

As part of its international outreach, BYUtv is a co-producer with Toronto’s marblemedia and Canadian broadcaster YES TV on primetime game show Just Like Mom and Dad. The net’s acquisitions include marblemedia’s medieval-themed game show Splatalot, which it snapped up last year, and the first five seasons of CBBC children’s drama Hetty Feather. It also continues to hold a longstanding deal with Disney to broadcast a range of its classic films from the ’50s to the ’90s including Miracle and Glory Road.
