Nick swims with Baby Shark, SpongeBob prequel

Pinkfong's YouTube hit is getting its first animated TV series, and the US kidsnet is heading to Kamp Koral with a 10-year-old SpongeBob.

Nickelodeon has struck a new content and global licensing deal with SmartStudy’s Korean subsidiary Pinkfong to develop an original Baby Shark animated series, and greenlit its first SpongeBob spinoff show Kamp Koral.

The Baby Shark deal will see Pinkfong and Nick co-produce the IP’s first TV series, which will feature the famous family of singing and dancing sharks. Since launching on YouTube in November 2015, Pinkfong’s Baby Shark video (pictured) has generated nearly three billion views, while the associated #BabySharkChallenge has amassed 700,000-plus cover videos worldwide. To date, Pinkfong has developed more than 100 Baby Shark videos in 11 different languages. Nick will distribute the series globally and Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products (VNCP) will manage worldwide CP (excluding Asia) for the IP, moving forward.

Continuing the unintentional undersea theme, Nickelodeon has ordered an original CG-animated spinoff series based on the iconic IP called Kamp Koral (working title). Aimed at six- to 11-year-olds, the 13-episode series will show the optimistic sea sponge as a 10-year-old at at sleep away camp. Beginning production this month at Nick’s Burbank studio, SpongeBob SquarePants‘ supervising producers Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller are co-executive producing the series.

The series greenlight comes as Nick continues to roll out new anniversary-related content and consumer products marking the July 1999 debut of SpongeBob SquarePants. As part of the celebration, Nick is premiering a new live-action and animated special, “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout,” on July 12, along with a new YouTube channel featuring music from the show and the short-form series Bikini Bottom Mysteries. The year-long celebration will wind down when The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge from Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures premieres in summer 2020. Created by Stephen Hillenburg, who passed away last November following a battle with ALS, SpongeBob SquarePants airs in 208 countries and is translated into more than 55 languages.

Continuing to capitalize on viral trends this year, Viacom Nickelodeon consumer products has also inked a deal with California’s Pocket.watch to oversee international licensing for its CP line Ryan’s World featuring YouTube star Ryan from Ryan ToysReview. It will also manage licensing for Nick’s new live-action series Ryan’s Mystery Playdate. VNCP will rep the brands in Europe, the Middle East, Canada and South America, while Pocket.watch will continue to handle licensing and merch for the US.
