Dutch games and puzzle company Jumbodiset Group is merging with British toymaker James Galt & Co in an effort to drive growth and strengthen the two companies’ international footprints.
Jumbo Toys is best known for arts and crafts items, games for kids ages three and older, and puzzles, including licensed products from Peter Rabbit and Disney (pictured). Galt Toys, meanwhile, focuses on games and educational toys for kids 10 and under.
James Galt’s managing director John McDonnell will head the business’ UK arm, responsible for the Galt Toys and Jumbo Toys brands. The deal will also see Galt combine its board games, creative play and toys portfolio with Jumbodiset brands like Wasgij, Falcon de Luxe and Puzzle Mates.
The merger comes as toy sales decline across Europe. According to market research firm The NPD Group, toy sales fell 2% across 13 global markets (including Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK) in 2018. Sales for the artsĀ and crafts segment remained steady during that same period, while the games and puzzles segment dropped 1% last year.
