Sony Pictures Animation has promoted Karen Rupert Toliver from SVP of creative development to EVP of creative. She joined the company in 2017, and will now be tasked with overseeing creative for a number of upcoming features for the studio.

Toliver is also in charge of discovering and acquiring new creative material and IP, including original concepts, books, comics, video games, shorts, websites and toys. The buildup comes at a time when Sony Pictures Animation just had a big win in the form of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which made US$375 million worldwide and became the top grossing Sony Pictures Animation film, according to Box Office Mojo.

Prior to joining Sony, Toliver spent 10 years at Fox Animation where she led development and production on the Rio franchise, and the last three Ice Age films. She also spearheaded the film Ferdinand, which was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. Before Fox, she spent several years as a production exec at Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Sony Pictures Animation is building up its international efforts as well, rolling out a new initiative at Annecy spearheaded by producer Aron Warner to develop and produce a wide range of features for local and worldwide release. First up is Wish Dragon—a co-pro with Sony, Beijing Sparkle Roll Media, Tencent and Base Media. Several projects are also in development in Mexico, France, South Africa, Colombia, Brazil and India.
