Universal Kids picked up French prodco TeamTO’s animated series Mighty Mike, and the non-dialogue comedy will have its US debut with the kidcaster on September 2.
Mighty Mike follows the titular pug as he tries to impress the dog next door and protect his home from intruders while his owners are away. The 78 x seven-minute series is aimed at six- to 10-year-olds.
Following its US debut, the series will launch with Boing (Italy, Spain) in September, then Super RTL (Germany) and France TV in October. Mighty Mike previously premiered with Tencent (China) and Boomerang (UK, Asia, LatAm and MEA). Additionally, TeamTO recently inked agreements with Canada’s DHX Television and CBC.
TeamTO also tapped New York-based Surge Licensing as the exclusive licensing and merchandising agent for the show in the US and Canada. Key consumer products categories will include toys, plush, figurines, publishing, apparel and pet products.
This is the first series NBCU-owned Universal Kids has picked up since it announced in June that it will no longer make original content in an effort to ensure the long-term viability of the channel. Universal Kids will stay on the air and continue as a linear channel, but moving forward it said it would only acquire content and continue its current partnership with DreamWorks Animation (also owned by NBCUniversal). Originals that had already been commissioned will air as scheduled, though Kidscreen was unable to confirm whether any of these shows would have the option of additional seasons.
“Universal really loves the show and have committed to promoting Mike,” TeamTO’s director of marketing and new business Patricia de Wilde told Kidscreen. “As fast as things are changing, in six months there could be a completely new strategy. We have seen shows move channels if they do well and Mighty Mike is a really strong show, so I think we have to keep an optimistic view on it and see it as a great starting position for Mike in the US.”
