WOW! Unlimited Media’s Frederator Studios is expanding its Bravest Warriors property with a new spin-off series centered around the Catbug character.
Bravest Warriors has run since 2012 on Frederator’s Cartoon Hangover YouTube channel (2.1 million subscribers). The four-season series is executive produced by Breehn Burns, Fred Seibert, Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi. The show went on to win a Shorty Award in 2013, a Webby in 2015 and was nominated at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
The break-out star from that series is Catbug (a Cat with a ladybug shell), whose GIFs and videos have brought in 135 million view on TikTok, 200 million loops on Giphy and 400,000 likes on YouTube. Burns created the character, when he served as the showrunner for Bravest Warriors. Development on the new 13 to 20 episodes is being led by Frederator’s Kelsey Calaitges, Nikki Price and Carrie Miller for streamers and broadcasters, rather than a digital launch.
To further expand Catbug’s presence to accompany the series, Frederator is working on a new roster of webcomics, animated videos and eBooks about the character. The prodco is also in active discussions with CP companies for new products.
This new series comes after a busy year for WOW! Unlimited Media, which launched its newest kids show Costume Quest in March on Amazon Prime as an original. Frederator is also in the works on another cat-focused property: It acquired the rights to develop and pitch an animated series based on the children’s book Catlantis in early 2018.
