Growing its catalogue of musical feature films, Netflix has joined the production of Paris-based Gaumont’s animated film High in the Clouds.
The movie is created and produced by Academy Award and 18-time Grammy Award winner Paul McCartney, and is based on the kids adventure novel (pictured) he wrote with children’s author Philip Ardagh. Both the book and the film trace an imaginative teenage squirrel who joins a gang of rebels living in the clouds.
The film has been in development since 2009 and features original songs written by McCartney. It’s aimed at general audiences and doesn’t have a specific age target, according to Netflix.
Gaumont boarded the film in 2017 and is now partnering with Netflix to take advantage of the SVOD service’s global reach, according to a statement from the studio. High in the Clouds is also the company’s first animated feature for its studio in the US.
Bob Shaye, Michael Lynne, Paul McCartney and Gaumont’s Sidonie Dumas, Christophe Riandee, Nicolas Atlan and Terry Kalagian are all serving as producers on the film. Jon Croker (Paddington, Paddington 2) is writing the screenplay and Timothy Reckart (Head Over Heels) set to direct.
Beyond the deal with Netflix, Gaumont has been building out its slate by adapting books Touch the Earth and Heal the Earth by Julian Lennon (the son of fellow Beatle John Lennon) into a kids series.
