BBC Learning joins Angelina Jolie’s media literacy show

Microsoft is also partnering with the actor and BBC World Service on Our World and a new initiative to help kids spot fake news.

Microsoft and BBC Learning, a division of BBC Studios, are joining the production of BBC World Service and Angelina Jolie’s (Maleficent) previously announced series Our World. All of the partners are also developing a yet unnamed global media literacy and student journalism initiative to go along with the show.

Our World, first announced in December 2018, aims to give kids seven- to 14-years-old the knowledge and skills to understand news and be able to accurately report on it, with Jolie as the exec producer. The 10 x half-hour series was originally scheduled to premiere in 2019, but has no newly rescheduled launch yet.

This new initiative is also a stepping stone in the BBC’s ongoing online education efforts: In 2017 the pubcaster launched a similar program to help kids better identify real news from fake or false information. The BBC’s School Report provided mentoring in classes, free online materials and video tutorials, along with an interactive game BBC iReporter developed by Bristol-based prodco Aardman, which let players experience what it’s like to be a BBC journalist in a newsroom.
