What happens to Kew Media’s kids content now?

As Kew Media Group faces bankruptcy and a directorless board, the future of two of its companies that make kids content, Bristow Global Media and Awesome Media, are uncertain.

On Friday, in accordance with an order from the Ontario Superior Court, FTI Consulting Canada has been appointed as the receiver of all its assets, undertakings and properties. FTI Consulting Canada will be managing Kew’s affairs and selling all of its assets in a bid to pay creditors. Shortly after going into receivership, its entire board of directors resigned.

The company’s senior lender Truist Bank has demanded repayment of all amounts owing under its senior credit facility.

While what this means for Bristow Global Media and Awesome Media is unknown, UK-based Awesome is on slightly better footing as Kew only held a minority stake in the company.

The Canadian company holds the distribution rights for The Small Hand: A Ghost Story, which is currently in production for Viacom’s Channel 5. The drama was Awesome’s first commission, and is an adaptation of Susan Hill’s novel of the same name. It is co-produced by Two Rivers Media. Kew Media and Truist Bank have not said what will happen with distribution rights for any properties it’s holding the rights for, moving forward. Awesome’s other projects, such as in development TV series Knights of Panterra with OmniFilm and The Jim Henson Company and Cloth Cat co-production Stomp School, are not affected at this point, Kidscreen confirmed.

Bristow Global Media did not return a request for comment at press time, but the company is fully owned by Kew Media. In mid-2018 the prodco promoted Daniel Bourré to the position of executive producer, kids. In the role, he has been overseeing BGM’s kids content and working with the prodco’s senior development team. It’s main kids project on air right now is the live-action series It’s My Party (pictured) on TVO, which Bourré executive produces.

Kew Media just launched publicly in March 2017.
