Netflix inked a first-look deal with BOOM! Studios, the LA-based publisher behind comic-book brands like Lumberjanes, Mouse Guard and Heavy Vinyl (pictured). The agreement covers live-action and animated content, and will see BOOM! CEO Ross Richie and president of development Stephen Christy serve as executive producers.

The publisher previously partnered with Netflix on the upcoming feature film The Unsound, based on the graphic novel by Cullen Bunn and Jack T. Cole. Additionally, BOOM! launched a graphic novel series tied to the streamer’s show Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

This first-look deal comes as Netflix continues to turn to publishing—and comic books, specifically—for fresh content. In 2017, the streamer purchased publishing outfit Millarworld to create original films, series and kids shows based on franchises like Kick-Ass, Kingsman and Old Man Logan. Netflix previously partnered with Disney-owned Marvel to bow superhero-based shows like Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Luke Cage, but the House of Mouse ended its licensing deal with the SVOD ahead of the launch of Disney+.

Netflix’s long list of book-based projects, meanwhile, includes a live-action series inspired by The Baby-Sitters Club books, an animated film based on Thelma the Unicorn and an exclusive deal with The Roald Dahl Story Company to create and produce a slate of original animated series based on books like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and The BFG.
