As LatAm kids remain in lockdown, their demand for locally made content is only growing, according to Parrot Analytics. Five of the top-20 most in-demand shows in the region are from South and Latin America.

Based on numbers from April 1 to April 30, Argentina-based Smilehood’s El Payaso Plim Plim (pictured) was the third most in-demand show across Latin America (16 times more in-demand compared to the average show), coming behind Peppa Pig and Steven Universe, which took first and second place, respectively. Preschool series Galinha Pintadinha, produced by Brazilian studio Bromelia (8.27 times), is 14th most in-demand. Cleo & Cuquin (7.75 times) from Mexico’s Anima Estudios comes in at the 15th spot; Bob Zoom (5.53 times), created by Brazil’s Bob Zoom, comes in at number 19; and rounding out the list is Brazil-based Conspiration Films’ tween-skewing live-action mystery D.p.a Detectives Do Predio Azul (5.32 times) at number 20.

Parrot calculates a show’s demand within markets by measuring engagement, viewership, social video views, social media interactions and piracy numbers on properties through a weighted formula (a stream of a series, for example, is weighted more than a mention on social).

In LatAm, the top five most in-demand shows are, in order, Peppa Pig, Steven UniverseEl Payaso Plim PlimStar Wars: Clone Wars and Masha and the Bear. The remaining top 20 in the region are (excluding those listed above) are Naruto: ShippudenMiraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat NoirSpongeBob SquarePantsPAW Patrol, Teen Titans, Dragon Ball Z, Talking Tom and Friends, Teen Titans Go!, PJ MasksThe Amazing World of Gumball, and Zig & Sharko.

Broadcasters and SVODs that operate in the region have been leaning into the popularity of locally made content lately. Netflix picked up Brazilian studio Hype Animation’s Tainá and the Amazon’s Guardians as well as 2D-animated series Lottie Dottie Mini (a spinoff of Galinha Pintadinha) from Brazil’s Bromelia Productions to stream across the region, and two seasons of Brazilian company Birdo Studio’s co-pro with eOne, Cupcake & Dino.

Discovery Kids Media meanwhile has lined up five new in-production series made in LatAm, including Birdo Studio and Chatrone Latin America Productions’ Bean & Friends, and MV Videos’ Super Lolo. Disney Channels too is building its made-in-the region offerings and ordered preschool buddy comedy Guitar & Drum from Porto Alegre-based Los Amigos.

In North America, Parrot Analytics found perennial favourite SpongeBob SquarePants held onto the number-one spot, followed by Steven Universe, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Avatar the Last Airbender and Dragon Ball Z. Asia’s most in-demand are, in order, Peppa Pig, Star Wars: The Clone WarsMasha and the BearPokémon and Naruto: Shippuden; while Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir, SpongeBob SquarePants, Peppa Pig, PAW Patrol and Masha and the Bear are the biggest in EMEA.
