HBO Max is ready to give ’em the old razzle dazzle. The SVOD, which launched in the US this week, has greenlit Homeschool Musical: Class of 2020.

The show will see real-life students star as high school seniors dealing with COVID-19 and quarantine. Homeschool Musical is inspired by the #SunshineSongs movement started by actress Laura Benanti (pictured), which was designed to create an online audience for students whose spring musicals were cancelled because of lockdown.

Homeschool Musical: Class of 2020 is executive produced by Benanti along with Randy Barbato, Fenton Bailey and Tom Campbell from California-based World of Wonder Productions. Leland will write and produce the show’s original songs and score.

The show’s musical focus is unique, but creating content inspired by COVID-19 is becoming a familiar tune. New pandemic-themed episodes of Italian kids series Jams will bow in June, and Nickelodeon’s live-action superhero series Danger Force debuted a quarantine-focused special earlier this month.

HBO Max launched with 10,000 hours of content, including new original series from Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios. In a statement, AT&T’s COO and CEO of WarnerMedia John Stankey said the company expects to spend as much as US$2 billion on new content, operating expenses and marketing for the SVOD this year.
