Netflix has ordered new live-action series The Last Bus from Bristol-based producer Wildseed, growing its catalogue of family-friendly sci-fi adventure content.

This eco-focused road trip show revolves around a group of students who team up to face off against terrifying machine intelligence and save the world from environmental breakdown. Pre-production starts this month, followed by shooting in the fall. There is no release date yet for the series, which is aimed at kids eight and up.

The 10 x 30-minute series is also one of a growing number of eco-conscious kids TV projects, a genre that Netflix previously dove into with its acquisition of preschool series Tainá and the Amazon’s Guardians from Sinocrine, Hype Animation and ViacomCBS.

Created and written by Paul Neafcy (pictured), The Last Bus will be directed by newbie directors Drew Casson and Nour Wazzi.

To come up with the series concept, Wildseed sought out up-and-coming creators to help develop and pitch their ideas to broadcasters and platforms. Using this same strategy, the prodco also produced Neafcy’s Prank Me and Philip Human series for Fullscreen.

This isn’t the first time Netflix has picked up content from Wildseed. The streamer previously expanded its family-skewing slate with the acquisition of live-action feature films Hungerford (about a group of teens who battle against sinister forces in their town) and its sequel The Darkest Dawn (where two teenage sisters fight to survive during the alien apocalypse).
