In a deal inked by the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF), Hulu has added Epic Films’ First Day, which documents a transgender girl’s first year of high school, to its lineup.
Created by Julie Kalceff, First Day is one of the first kids series to explicitly follow the life of a transgender youth. Australian pubcaster ABC ordered the four x half-hour series in 2019, and it will launch on Hulu on September 3.
Produced by Australia’s Epic Films in association with Kojo Entertaiment, First Day received funding from Screen Australia, South Australian Film Corporation, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the ACTF. ACTF distributes the series internationally, and has already sold it to broadcasters including BBC (UK), YLE (Finland), NRK (Norway), SVT (Sweden) and MOMOKIDS (Taiwan).
Disney-owned Hulu has become the House of Mouse’s home for content that skews a little older than its family-friendly Disney+ audience. Love, Victor, a teen drama series that’s a spin-off of the Love, Simon film, was originally ordered by Disney+ but then moved to Hulu earlier this year.
