Mattel Films is partnering with LA-based prodco 2Dux² to develop and co-produce an animated/live-action Thomas & Friends movie.
The project expands Mattel Films’ development slate to 10 features, and most recently follows a deal with Universal Pictures to make a theatrical film adaptation of ’90s live-action TV series Wishbone.
Mattel will co-produce the Thomas & Friends family adventure film with 2Dux² co-founders and Christopher Robin producers Marc Forster and Renée Wolfe. Forster will also direct, while Alyssa Hill (A Taste of Power) and Jesse Wigutow (TRON3) have been tapped as scriptwriters. Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner (executive producer) and Kevin McKeon (supervising producer) are also attached.
Other Mattel features in the works include Barbie and Hot Wheels pics, a live-action American Girl film with MGM, and a Barney movie.
This won’t be the first time Thomas & Friends has been brought to the big screen. Gullane Pictures and Isle of Man Film Commission released Thomas and the Magic Railroad in 2000 as a US/UK joint venture.
