YouTube unveils slate focused on Black culture

Pocket.watch's Onyx Family Dinner will begin airing in 2021, and joins a handful of adult-oriented shows focused on elevating Black voices.

As conversations around racism, racial justice and Black Lives Matter continue to happen globally, YouTube has unveiled a slate of originals focused on Black voices. The majority of these new series are targeting adult audiences, but among them is Pocket.watch’s Onyx Family Dinner.

Set to premiere in early 2021, the live-actioner tracks the Onyxes, a family of YouTubers (6.6 million subscribers) that hosts weekly dinner guests. Onyx Family Dinner is executive produced by Keith Brown, Albie Hecht, Chris Williams and the Onyx family, and it will be produced in association with prodco Shine Global. Episode length and count hadn’t been announced at press time.

Pocket.watch first partnered with the Onyx family in spring 2019 to grow its channel’s reach and break into new formats. The prodco previously greenlit an animated series called Onyx Family Monster Mysteries, for a tentative delivery later this year.

Onyx Family Dinner joins four greenlit projects for grown-ups: documentaries Resist (focused on the work of a grassroots organization to fight an LA jail expansion) and Barbershop Medicine (tackling the health role barbershops have in Black communities); and live-stream events HBCU Homecoming 2020: Meet Me On The Yard and Bear Witness And Take Action Part Two.

The new YouTube slate also includes a number of renewals, including Sinking Ship’s Lockdown, a socially distanced mystery series that was conceived, pitched and shot completely in lockdown. An additional six episodes will explore issues of racial injustice and activism, in addition to life in a pandemic.
