Deals of the Week: Wonderstorm, Guru, ZAG

Disney+ Hotstar snags local content, The Dragon Prince soars into licensing, and European broadcasters scoop up animated series.

WowKidz

WowKidz, the distribution arm of Indian animation studio Cosmos-Maya, has signed new international broadcast sales for Cosmos-Maya’s catalogue of animated series. Indian streamer Disney+ Hotstar has acquired a total of 130 half hours from Vir: The Robot Boy (pictured), Eeena Meena DeekaChacha Bhatija and Harry.

Also in India, IN10 media has snagged 78 half hours of Atchoo, Berry Bees and OPS for its new kids channel Gubbare. US-based streamer Olympusat Entertainment acquired pay TV and digital rights for 221 half hours of those same titles, while Dubai’s Dubuzz Entertainment has picked up non-exclusive AVOD rights for 208 half hours of Motu Patlu and Chacha Bhatija.

Soon-to-launch English and Punjab platform Heeroz OTT has acquired worldwide non-exclusive rights for Vir: The Robot Boy and Chacha Bhatija. And finally, China’s Puxin and Zhong Lu have picked up non-exclusive digital rights for 335 half hours of Motu Patlu, Vir: The Robot Boy, Eena Meena Deeka and Tik Tak Tail to stream on IPTV.

Wonderstorm

LA-based Wonderstorm has signed a deal with Californian licensing agency Striker Entertainment for the prodco’s Netflix series The Dragon Prince. Striker will ink global deals for apparel, accessories and toys on behalf of the brand.

The animated fantasy adventure follows two human princes who forge an unexpected bond with an elven assassin while on a quest to return a baby dragon to his parents. It’s one of the streamer’s most in-demand original series, according to Parrot Analytics, and Netflix has ordered seven seasons of the show. Wonderstorm has been growing the series’ reach recently, tapping LA-based PGS Entertainment as global distributor for second window rights.

Guru

Toronto-based studio Guru has inked a number of international broadcast deals for its preschool series Pikwik Pack (52 x 11 minutes) and True and the Rainbow Kingdom (30 x 22 minutes). Guru has signed pre-sale deals with Super RTL (Germany), Canal Panda (Portugal), HOP (Israel) and Minimini+ (Poland). The upcoming 2D-animated series is set to premiere on Disney Junior in the US in early 2021, and revolves around a group of animals who deliver magical packages.

New broadcasters to snag Guru’s flagship series True and the Rainbow Kingdom include TVP ABC (Poland), 9Go! (Australia) and American Forces Network (US). Israel’s HOP and Star Channel (Greece) have acquired seasons three and four, while HOP also signed on as L&M agent in Israel for the series. True and the Rainbow Kingdom is about a young girl and her cat who use a magical tree to solve problems.

Atlantyca

Milan-based producer Atlantyca Entertainment has locked in new international broadcast deals for a handful of its animated series. NRK (Norway) has picked up season three of comedy Geronimo Stilton, while MTVA (Hungary) has picked up seasons one and two of the show. Geronimo Stilton follows a mouse reporter as she hunts for news with family and friends. It originally premiered on Italian pubcaster RAI in 2009.

Greece’s children’s channel Smile TV has picked up season one of spooky comedy Bat Pat (52 x 11 minutes). Produced by Imira and Atlantyca with participation from Rai Fiction and RTVE, the show is about a bat and his siblings who solve monster mysteries.   

ZAG

LA’s ZAG has inked a deal with Aussie licensing agency Merchantwise for ZAG’s Heroez banner in Australia and New Zealand. Under the deal, Merchantwise will represent ZAG’s Miraculous – Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir (130 x 22 minutes) and Power Players (78 x 11 minutes). The deal comes as Playmates Toys and ZAG Lab gears up to launch Power Players toys in Australia on October 26, and animated TV movie Miraculous World – New York – United HeroeZ launches in the country on October 31.
