Netflix is piloting a linear channel in France called Direct. This is the company’s first foray into real-time, scheduled programming.
Traditional TV consumption remains popular in France, with viewers enjoying the curation element a linear channel provides, according to a release from Netflix.
Direct is currently being tested and only accessible via a web browser for Netflix subscribers. When the feature is selected, it will offer a scheduled flow of content that includes French, European and international content. Some of the initial options will include Family Business, The Crown and Unorthodox.
For now, the pilot won’t include children’s programming, a Netflix spokesperson told Kidscreen, and the Direct option will not be available on children’s profiles.
The linear functionality began gradually rolling out across France on November 5, and it will be made available to all French subscribers by the beginning of December.
Netflix has been growing its presence in France significantly this year. In January, it opened a new office in Paris and announced increased investment in local content. The SVOD also put in place 20 new local productions and partnerships with French creative institutions.
