New York-based prodco King Features and The Jim Henson Company are developing a new animated family sitcom inspired by the comic strip Hägar the Horrible.

The companies will team up to produce the new series, which stars the hardworking Viking family and its out-of-date patriarch Hägar. Eric Ziobrowski (Fresh Off the Boat, American Dad!) is on board to write. Henson CEO and president Lisa Henson and president of TV Halle Stanford will exec produce, alongside C.J. Kettler, president of King Features. No details on format or delivery date have been announced yet.

Henson will manage animation through its Henson Digital Puppetry Studio, which allows animated characters to be puppeteered in real time.

The Hägar the Horrible comic strip was created in 1973 by Dik Browne. Distributed by King Features, the strip still reaches more than 80 million people in more than 50 countries, according to a release.

This partnership is part of King Feature’s plan to adapt the well-known comic strips and brands (such as Popeye and Betty Boop) in its portfolio for screens. The prodco is also working on an adaptation of video game Cuphead for Netflix that will launch next year.
