Netflix has acquired Sony Pictures Animation’s The Mitchells vs. The Machines, directed by Mike Rianda and produced by The LEGO Movie‘s Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
Sony originally planned to release the animated comedy theatrically on October 23, 2020, but with the pandemic still wreaking havoc in the big-screen marketplace, Netflix has now acquired the exclusive worldwide rights (excluding China).
The film has gone through a few name changes, and was previously called Connected. Co-directed by Jeff Rowe, The Mitchells explores a family’s struggle to relate while technology around the world begins to rise up and rebel.
Lord and Miller also produced Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Producing alongside them is Kurt Albrecht, while Will Allegra and Louis Koo Tin Lok have executive producer credits on the film.
There is no release date for the movie on Netflix yet, though it will join several other animated pics premiering this year, including Aardman’s Chicken Run sequel and Back to the Outback.
