Netflix has picked up global rights (excluding China) to Hasbro’s new My Little Pony movie from Entertainment One. The CG-animated feature will premiere on the streaming giant in September, in lieu of a theatrical release.

From eOne’s animation outfit Boulder Media, My Little Pony is being directed by Rob Cullen, Jose Ucha and Mark Fattibene. Cecil Kramer and Peter Lewis are producing.

Paramount Pictures had previously been tapped to handle distribution for the film. But when Hasbro acquired Entertainment One in December 2019, eOne was set up as the toyco’s global entertainment arm, with responsibility for content and distribution.

Kicking things off, eOne secured Latin America’s Discovery Kids as a broadcaster for My Little Pony: Pony Life. The 2D-animated series hit screens late last year and is designed to help the MLP brand gallop into a new era, acting as a transition between the previous series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and the upcoming feature film.

Set in the same world featured in Magic is Friendship and Pony Life, the upcoming film will jump ahead in time to focus on new characters and unexplored corners of Equestria. The movie will also focus on modern themes like diversity and inclusion, with an activist main character working to make the pony world a better place.

Consumer products efforts for the film will include a focus on categories that saw significant growth in recent months, like health & wellness, puzzles & games, publishing, food, personal care and home goods. The first SKUs are set to hit shelves at major retailers around the world in August.
