Netflix is hoping to make waves with Surviving Summer, a new live-action surfing series for teens in production down under.

The 10-episode series tells the story of a teenager from New York who catches the competitive surfing bug when she’s sent to live with family friends in Australia.

Netflix is producing the show with Werner Film Productions (Dance Academy) and Germany’s ZDF Enterprises.

Joanna Werner will executive produce, and co-pro partner ZDF is handling worldwide distribution, except in territories where Netflix holds the rights. Film Victoria is also funding the production, which is slated to shoot in regional Victoria this March and April.

Netflix announced the co-pro deal at Australian industry event Screen Forever (formerly SPAA Conference), which wraps up tomorrow.

The collaboration is further evidence that Netflix is deepening its kids content partnerships in Australia. The streamer recently picked up teen diving series Dive Club from live-action prodco The Steve Jaggi Company, as well as greenlighting Brindle Films’ motorcycling vehicle MaveriX.

Aussie producers have been quite vocal in lobbying for streamers and broadcasters to make and air more local Australian content, and the country’s federal government has proposed reforms that would force streaming platforms to invest a percentage of revenue in local content.
