Netflix to adapt Asterix comics

Hachette is working with the streamer to turn the brand into a limited 3D-animated comedy series that will launch in 2023.

Netflix is partnering with Hachette’s Les Editions Albert René division to turn the French publisher’s Asterix comic books into an animated series for the first time ever.

Alain Chabat (Asterix & Obelisk: Mission Cleopatra) is directing the 3D-animated adaptation, with Legende Films’ Alain Goldman producing. Like the comics, the limited comedy series centers around an aggressive warrior and his friends as they battle to protect Gaul from bumbling invaders, and it’s set to launch in 2023.

The first Asterix comic was published in 1959, and a total of 38 volumes have been released since then. The IP has also spawned films, games, a theme park and many licensed products. The original strip was written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo, but Jean-Yves Ferri (writer) and Didier Conrad (illustrator) took over these creative duties in 2013.

This isn’t the only Asterix TV adaptation in the works, however. France’s LS Distribution recently secured worldwide distribution rights to Studio 58’s upcoming Idefix and the Idomitables spinoff with GMT Productions. Based on the same comics from Hachette, this series is focused on a dog and his friends who work together to protect Paris from a villainous general and his pet cat.

Netflix has been increasingly turning to comics for new kids content of late. The streamer inked a first-look deal with LA-based BOOM! Studios in April, and acquired comic book publisher Millarworld in 2017 to create more originals. It’s also turning graphic novel series DeadEndia into a 2D-animated show.
