The British Film Institute’s Young Audience Content Fund (YACF) is funding a dozen new projects that are gearing up for launch on broadcasters across the UK.

Scottish free-to-air channel BBC Alba has picked up eight x 15-minute comedy Three at 3 (pictured) from Glasgow-based Sorbier Productions. This live-action series follows two young kids who try to fix up their family’s rundown B&B and attract new guests. The channel has also acquired 15-minute short The Piano from Scotland’s MacTV, about a 10-year-old girl who hates pianos until she discovers the power of music.

CITV has ordered Zodiak Kids Studio’s Ted’s Top 10, a 10 x 30-minute scripted comedy revolving around Ted, who is always ready to share his tips for every situation as he tries and fails to improve his popularity. The channel also picked up Paper Owl Films’ 2D-animated preschool series Happy (26 x seven minutes) and The Sound Collector (60 x five minutes) from Eagle vs Bat, which received funding last year.

Welsh broadcaster S4C picked up Paper Owl’s Happy as well, and is banking on Boom Cymru’s sci-fi adventure The Lighthouse (six x 30 minutes) to attract older viewers with a storyline about a group of teens who investigate the strange things happening in their seaside village. S4C also acquired factual program Election 21: If I Were the First Minister from ITV Broadcasting, which looks at how kids are making their voices are heard in Welsh politics. And rounding out the broadcaster’s YACF-funded acquisitions is Cynhyrchiadau Ceidiog Creations Cyf’s Dwdl a Fi, an eight x 20-minute mixed-media drama centering on an animated character who explores mental health topics such as anxiety and PTSD.

ITV2 has committed to Noho Films’ teen drama Tell Me Everything (60 x one hour), which explores the stresses kids face around social media, growing up and mental health. ITV Studios produced the special with Noho for ITV2 and its VOD player ITV Hub.

The YACF content fund is also supporting the development of five new projects: Kids sitcom Idris’ Life from ChorMedia is set in the ’90s and stars a 13-year-old Muslim boy with autism; 276 Productions’ comedy drama Ready to Launch is about two 12-year-old girls who run a popular app; YA drama (Dis)Harmony from Headline Pictures follows two twins who compete to be the best in a youth orchestra; BiLLO Studio’s factual series Asking for a Friend covers hard-to-discuss topics around sexuality, health and identity for kids; and Awen Productions’ documentary Protest talks to a new generation of female activists while looking back at a series of women-led demonstrations.
