Best known for its to-do list app Checkmark, Toronto-based game developer Snowman is expanding into kids content for the first time with Pok Pok Playroom. The new game, which launches on May 20 in the Apple App Store, is all about letting preschooler play at their own pace.
This is the first app to come out of Pok Pok—a kids company which Snowman set up in 2019 to focus on play-based learning content.
Aimed at two- to six-year-olds, Pok Pok Playroom is a sandbox app that emulates a physical playroom where kids can engage in open-ended games like drawing and building. But unlike many other kids game apps, there are no winners, losers, prizes or goals in Pok Pok Playroom. Instead, kids are encouraged to lead their own play and learning experience. The text- and language-free game also provides simple questions that parents can ask to help their kids learn while playing.
Snowman’s Esther Huybreghts and Mathijs Demaeght created the game, and opted for simple hand-drawn animation and relaxing music to avoid over-stimulating players. Pok Pok also worked closely with educators, child researchers and parents in building the app.
To keep users engaged, more games and features will become available as kids explore the game. Pok Pok will also update features and add new content regularly. The ad-free app costs US$3.99 a month or US$29.99 a year, and there are no in-app purchases.
