New York-based kidtech company BEGiN has acquired codeSpark. Following the acquisition, BEGiN will fold the coding company’s resources into its early learning program HOMER.
HOMER—which teaches preschoolers about literacy, math, social-emotional development and critical thinking—will integrate codeSpark’s coding-focused games and interactive stories into its educational program.
Pasadena-based codeSpark is aimed at kids six to 10, and the additional resources will help HOMER continue its expansion beyond its traditional zero to six demo. The codeSpark Academy app has more than 20 million downloads, and has a presence in US schools, according to a release.
HOMER has been growing beyond its literacy roots in the last year, and most recently tapped former Sesame Workshop creative director J Milligan as its first VP of children’s creative. In 2020, it landed US$50 million in funding from the likes of LEGO Ventures and Sesame Workshop. That financial injection supported the techco’s growth into other subjects, such as math and critical thinking.
