Famous TV cat-and-mouse team Toopy and Binoo are heading to the big screen with Canada’s Corus Entertainment.
Montreal’s Echo Media is producing an 80-minute, 2D-animated comedy-adventure in association with Corus. Toopy and Binoo—The Movie (pictured) will hit theaters sometime in 2022, before airing on Corus-owned kidsnet Treehouse.
Based on Dominique Jolin’s children’s book series of the same name, Toopy and Binoo first aired on Treehouse (in English) and Télé-Québec (in French) in the early 2000s. The IP was also adapted into a live stage show and a series of digital apps.
Jolin is co-writing and co-directing the feature with Toopy and Binoo TV director Raymond Lebrun. Luc Chatelain, who produced the series, is also producing the movie for Echo. In the film, Toopy and Binoo set off on a mythical adventure after a genie accidently makes Binoo’s beloved stuffed toy disappear.
Echo Media began early development on the movie in late 2017. It will join Corus’s growing slate of kids programming, which includes renewed YTV series Kid Food Nation: The Show (eight x 11 minutes), The Zone, The Zone Weekend and Big Fun Movies. The broadcaster’s YTV slate is waiting on delivery of three new animated series from Nelvana—Best and Bester (52 x 11 minutes), ZJ Sparkleton (working title, 26 x 22 minutes) and Super Wish (52 x 11 minutes). And Nelvana’s Agent Binky: Pets of the Universe has also been renewed at Treehouse.
