National arts initiative The Future Perfect Project has announced its new short film series How Life Is: Queer Youth Animated in celebration of Pride Month. Each video in this multimedia project highlights challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth, including coming out, relationships, peer acceptance and homophobia.

Cal’s short, for example, tells the story of how he came out to his family as a transgender man. And Brianna’s film focuses on the challenges faced by Black bisexual women.

In addition to spotlighting the stories and voices of LGBTQ+ tweens and teens, the How Life Is series also paired the young person featured in each episode with creative teams that were closely aligned in terms of race, gender and sexual identity. And all of the participating animators are part of the LGBTQ+ community.

The series features 10 two-minute shorts that will be available on YouTube and Instagram TV. The first two videos premiered on June 1, and new episodes are set to be released in pairs on June 8, 15, 22 and 29.

Pride Month is triggering quite a lot of themed family content launches right now. Edtech platform Supernow is rolling out three new inclusivity-focused specials this month, and Cartoon Network’s Drawn To series will highlight inspirational LGBTQ+ kids and families throughout June.

Beyond this media initiative, the Future Perfect Project also offers grant-funded online writing, arts and performance workshops for LGBTQ+ youth and allies.
