Washington-based edtech company DreamBox Learning is acquiring kids reading platform Reading Plus to expand its audience and improve product quality.

DreamBox is a program that teachers and parents can download onto computers and tablets. It includes 2,000 animated math and literacy games and challenges for preschoolers to young teens. The edtech company will fold Reading Plus into its DreamBox product. Financial terms for the acquisition were not disclosed.

This move comes as educators and parents continue to seek out resources to supplement kid literacy, which was disrupted by the pandemic and the year of online learning it necessitated, according to a release from DreamBox. The deal also includes Reading Plus’s data and analytic tools, which will help educators better guide kids’ learning.

DreamBox is used by more than five million students and 200,000-plus educators in the US, Canada and Mexico. The company previously acquired Squiggle Park, a preschool-skewing early literacy edtech company that was also folded into DreamBox.

Edtech companies have flourished during the pandemic, when social distancing and online learning highlighted the need for additional resources. Early learning platform Lingokids raised US$40 million in funding to support new content and build its team, and kidcos such as Encantos, Curious World and id Tech all rolled out new content and resources to support at-home education.
