Disney tees up new content for Plus Day

A new Wimpy Kid animated series, a live-action Spiderwick Chronicles adaptation, and a Chip 'n Dale reboot are all headed onto the streamer.

The House of Mouse has unveiled a plethora of new series and movies for Disney Plus Day—a special event marking the service’s two-year anniversary. In all, Disney announced more than 20 titles, as well as dozens of renewals.

On its slate is a 2022 animated adaptation of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, based on Jeff Kinney’s 2008 book of the same name. It’s the second animated movie project in the Wimpy Kid franchise—Disney announced in September that it was turning Kinney’s first book in the series, 2007’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid, into a original movie that will start streaming on December 3.

Disney+ is also set to reboot Disney Channel’s animated series Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, which ran from 1989 to 1990, as an all-new live-action/CG-animated movie of the same name starring John Mulaney and Andy Samberg. It’s earmarked to launch next spring and follows Disney+/Xilam Animation’s 39 x seven-minute animated series Chip ‘n Dale: Park Life, which premiered on July 28.

A new animated Ice Age movie starring Simon Pegg is also on the way. Prehistoric adventure The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild (pictured) is set to drop on January 28, and will be the sixth movie in the popular film franchise.

In live-action projects, popular children’s book series The Spiderwick Chronicles by authors Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black is being adapted as a series. Produced in partnership with Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television, the show will feature a modernized fantasy-adventure story tracking the Grace children as they move into a new home and unravel a mystery involving a secret faerie world.

Other titles on the roster include new Marvel and Star Wars projects; series based on popular films such as The Princess and the Frog, Zootopia and the Cars franchiseand a new season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.
