Dinosaur Train stomps onto Pinna with podcast

With its thundering dinos and rumbling train engines, the audio-rich original series made an easy transition to a podcast format, says Pinna's Amy Kraft.

Audio streaming service Pinna is hoping to achieve some major mileage with new podcast Dinosaur Train: Ride Along Adventures, which is set to launch next month.

This latest adaptation of the Emmy-nominated PBS KIDS preschool show has been produced in partnership with The Jim Henson Company.

Pinna will release the first season’s 10 episodes on a biweekly basis, starting on December 13. The podcast will feature the same characters from the original CG-animated series as they learn about prehistoric animals and the natural world. No other format details had been released at press time.

Amy Kraft, Pinna’s director of development and children’s programming, says Dinosaur Train—with its chugging train sounds and stomping dinos—was very audio-rich already, which made the transition to a podcast format much easier. And the intimacy of audio creates the possibility for listeners to feel like they’re actually riding on the train along with T-rex Buddy and other fan-favorite characters.

Leaning into what works so well in the original series, the podcast will offer similar music and comedy elements, says Halle Stanford, president of television at Henson. The goal is to deliver a unique experience that encourages listeners to use their imaginations to enhance a story context they are already familiar with.

This isn’t the first time Dinosaur Train has ventured off screen—in 2013, Henson, Mills Entertainment, Gables Groce Productions and The Bad Simon Organization launched a live stage production called Dinosaur Train Live Buddy’s Big Adventure.
