Mattel is ready to take flight with a new live-action film called Christmas Balloon, its first project based on a brand-new IP.

Inspired by a true story, this family drama is about a young girl living in a Mexican border town who ties her Christmas list to a balloon in an effort to send it to Santa. A couple in Arizona finds it and works with Mattel to make Dáyami’s Christmas wishes come true.

The pic’s original screenplay will be written by Gabriela Revilla Lugo (pictured), with VP Kevin McKeon and creative executive Ivan Sanchez leading the project for Mattel Films. Vital Pictures’ Chris Lemos and Luis Guerrero will produce.

Christmas Balloon is the 14th movie that Mattel Films has developed; it joins a roster that includes titles based on Barbie, Barney, Hot Wheels, Polly Pocket, View Master and Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots.
