UK broadcaster Sky Kids has ordered a new live-action comedy series called Little Darlings from London-based Kindle Entertainment. Based on Jacqueline Wilson’s book of the same name, the laugher will launch on February 11 on linear TV and Sky’s NOW streaming service.
Little Darlings is a four x 22-minute miniseries revolving around an 11-year-old girl who meets her rock star father and his family for the first time, and gains a best friend and musical partner in her new sister.
Sky Kids is also planning to roll out a vlog-style companion series called On Tour: Little Darlings in tandem with the miniseries. These short-form episodes will see the show’s characters sharing what their everyday lives are like on tour with their dad. Nathan Bryon and Jonny Wright were responsible for the TV adaptation of Wilson’s book, which was published in 2010. And NBCUniversal Global Distribution is handling international sales for both the miniseries and the shorts.
Popular UK musicians Lemar Obika (pictured fourth) and “I Do” singer Jamelia Niela Davis (pictured second) will play the parents in Little Darlings, with Obika (Fame Academy) also creating original music for the series. Diaana Babnicova (pictured first) and Janae Vito (pictured third) have been respectively cast as new sisters Sunset and Destiny.
Wilson’s books have proven to be popular source material for kids TV adaptations—last year, the BBC ordered The Beaker Girls, which is based on her Tracey Beaker publishing series. And BBC Children’s In-House Productions and CBBC also produced Jacqueline Wilson’s Katy, which won an International Kids Emmy Award for Best Kids: TV Movie/Miniseries in 2020. Wilson has sold more than 10 million books in over 30 languages, according to the British Council, a UK government cultural organization.
Kindle Entertainment, best known for producing kids series such as Big & Small for CBeebies and Netflix’s teen-skewing The A List, has also had success with Wilson adaptations in the past. One of the studio’s earliest projects was Dustbin Baby, a TV movie based on Wilson’s book of the same name that premiered on the BBC in 2008.
