Rebecca Glashow has big plans for BBC Studios’ kids content distribution business.
The former president of BBC Studios Americas has been promoted into a newly created role as CEO of global distribution, overseeing all content sales and growth across platforms.
As of March 1, she will manage global distribution—excluding the UK and Ireland—with an eye towards building out direct-to-consumer services, international channels and co-productions, and expanding the reach of the BBC’s digital news.
On the kids front, the Beeb is working to become a force in kids entertainment by merging its BBC Children’s in-house production team with its commercial-focused BBC Studios division, Glashow tells Kidscreen. When the reorganization is complete in April, she will turn her attention to kids content distribution, starting with the hire of a London-based global sales director for children’s programming.
There will be a focus on expanding the sales footprint of series that have already made a mark internationally, such as Ludo Studio’s Bluey, which airs globally on Disney Junior and Disney+. Glashow also plans to introduce shows that are popular in the UK, like Studio AKA’s Hey Duggee, which airs on the BBC and its preschool channel CBeebies, to new audiences worldwide.
She adds that BBC Studios is also attracting new eyeballs with the launch of its first ad-supported kids channels, BBC Kids and Spanish-language Ninos Por BBC, which are operating in the US via Pluto TV.
“We have such a strong offering and reputation in this area, and we are absolutely targeting growth [in kids],” says Glashow.
Prior to taking on this new role, Glashow led content sales and oversaw the BBC’s commercial strategy in the US, Canada and LatAm as president of BBC Studios Americas, a position she’d been in since June 2020. Before joining the Beeb, she was co-head of Viacom-owned AwesomenessTV, where she executive produced teen-skewing movie To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. She has also previously served in distribution roles at AwesomenessTV and Discovery Communications.
