Nickelodeon is rebooting classic comedy Snow Day (pictured) as a live-action musical feature film, and has just starting filming the project in Montreal.

The movie, which is expected to stream later this year on Paramount+, will tag along with a group of kids who set out to break routines, take risks and follow their dreams when their school closes for a snow day.

Emmy winner Michael Lembeck (The Santa Clause 2 and 3) is directing, with a script from Samantha Martin (Henry Danger The Musical), who also wrote original music for the pic. Overseeing the Nickelodeon Studios production are Zack Olin and Shauna Phelan, the co-heads of Nickelodeon and Awesomeness Live-Action. Brittany Cope is serving as Nick’s executive in charge of production.

The movie’s cast includes Ky Baldwin (Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door), Michaela Russell (WandaVision), Shelby Simmons (Bunk’d), Fabi Aguirre (“Les Misérables” on Broadway) and Jerry Trainor (iCarly).

The original Snow Day movie starring Chris Elliot and Jean Smart was a box-office hit for Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures when it premiered in 2000, bringing in US$62.4 million at the global box office on a US$13-million budget, according to tracking site Box Office Mojo.

Nick has been expanding its movie slate of late, most recently putting teen sports feature Fantasy Football, YA book adaptation Hush Hush and a live-action/animated Blue’s Clues movie into production. It’s also working on an animated Avatar movie and a live-action adaptation of The Fairly OddParents.
