Netflix’s Oscar-nominated feature film The Mitchells vs. the Machines (pictured, Sony Pictures Animation) and League of Legends vidgame-based series Arcane were big winners at the 49th annual Annie Awards, where the streamer collected the most trophies with an impressive 20 wins.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines won in every category it was nominated in (eight in total), beating out Disney’s Encanto and Raya and the Last Dragon, Pixar’s Luca and Illumination/Universal’s Sing 2 for Best Feature, and also leaving with trophies for Best Direction, Best FX and Best Character Design.
Arcane also dominated in its series-focused categories, scoring the most wins (nine) of any nominated entry. The YA-skewing series from Riot Games and France’s Fortiche Productions collected prizes for Best TV/Media—General Audience, Best FX—TV/Media and Best Direction—TV/Media.
Netflix won a pair of awards for limited series Maya and the Three (Best TV/Media—Children and Best Music—TV/Media), and Ada Twist, Scientist took home a Best TV/Media—Preschool prize.
As for Disney, Encanto scored three wins with nine nominations, winning for music, storyboarding and character animation. Raya and the Last Dragon, however, was shut out completely after leading the shortlist race with 10 nominations.
The Annie Awards were presented virtually for the second year in a row on Saturday night. A full list of winners is available online, but here are the results in a few key categories:
