The ongoing partnership between Disney and LA-based prodco Supper Club has borne more fruit, with the launch of a new six-part instructional series focusing on animation.
Launching on Disney+ on April 27, the non-fiction series Sketchbook leans on legacy Disney IPs to engage the streamer’s co-view audience. Each episode takes audiences on a behind-the-scenes journey with a Disney artist who demonstrates how to draw an iconic character, ranging from classics like Captain Hook to perennial kid-favorite Olaf. .
The partnership between Supper Club and Disney was initiated in 2019 and has since included Disney+ docuseries Marvel’s 616 and Pixar SparkShorts-focused A Spark Story.
Disney has been experimenting with different formats as it seeks to fill its streamer pipeline, with annual subscribers expecting new content on a regular basis. Sketchbook builds on its recent efforts in the unscripted/instructional space, such as Zenimation, a 10-episode series featuring scenes from Disney movies that feature soothing sounds like rushing water or a gentle breeze.
Like Zenimation, Sketchbook provides an entry point for viewers through popular characters, and offers subscribers both viewing and actionable content, a combination that gained particular relevance during the pandemic. In addition to Peter Pan and Frozen characters, the episodes also feature Kuzco (The Emperor’s New Groove), Mirabel (Encanto), Simba (Lion King) and Genie (Aladdin).
