The “new media” space went back to the future this week when YouTube announced a new option to watch full TV episodes for free with ads.
Sound familiar?
US viewers will now be able to stream films and thousands of full-length TV episodes with ads inserted, mimicking both linear TV and AVODs like Roku Channel. New navigation options and immersive banner art will promote the content, offering viewers the choice to either rent, buy or view content on the platform for free with ads. The storefront is here.
Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate, FilmRise and others have currently licensed 1,500 titles into the storefront. Kids and family titles such as the film Miracle Dogs from Tag Entertainment are included in the “Free with Ads” offering.
YouTube is already a giant when it comes to screen time among kids: UK research firm Childwise recently found that British children spend almost two hours a day on the platform. Full episodes of kids series such as Paw Patrol, Blippi and Arthur are already offered on these brands’ proprietary YouTube channels, and kids movies are available ad-free via pay-per-view options.
