New series, franchise expansions and a slew of renewals were unveiled during Nickelodeon’s 2022 upfront presentation yesterday.
More than 40 projects are in the pipeline for the kids network, including a newly announced spinoff of PAW Patrol featuring the construction-hatted character Rubble. Set to coincide with the property’s 10th anniversary in 2023, this new series will also premiere alongside the feature film sequel PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie.
A live-actioner based on the 2D-animated series The Loud House is in production and will premiere later this year on Paramount+. It’s slated to follow feature film A Loud House Christmas in he production schedule, and Nick will begin shooting the 10-episode first season this June.
The kidsnet is also bringing back the ’90s for a new generation with Face’s Music Party, featuring a reimagined version of Nick Jr. mascot Face, voiced by Cedric Williams. The music variety show will combine animation and live action as Face plays modern hits and nursery rhymes.
Finally, two new book-based series are in the works for preschool kids. Based on a picture book from author David Horvath and his wife Sun-Min Kim, Bossy Bear follows the misadventures of its namesake character and his friend Turtle, two unlikely friends who make the perfect team for navigating childhood adventures. Meanwhile, HexVet (pictured) will take kids into the magical world of Willows Whisper as Boom! Studios’ graphic novel comes to life. The 2D/CG-animated series sees friends Nan and Clarion apprenticing to be magical veterinarians.
The Baby Shark and Transformers franchisesare also growing. Baby Shark has a movie in development for Paramount+ and an upcoming special featuring musician Cardi B, while Transformers: Earthspark is shaping up for a Paramount+ series,and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is headed to the big screen in 2023. An animated Transformers film is also slated to debut on July 19, 2024.
Season renewals include SpongeBob SquarePants (season 14), PAW Patrol (season 10), Blues Clues & You! (season five), Big Nate (season two), Blaze and the Monster Machines (season seven), Middlemost Post (season two) and Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Ghost Island (season three).
Beyond TV content, a second season of companion podcast Avatar: Braving the Elements is in development. And in other audio entertainment news, a Nickelodeon kids music label is gearing up to launch, and a new girl group called Good NEWZ Girls has been formed, and more projects expected to be revealed soon.
