Amazon Freevee greenlights two family-friendly series

Live-action dramedy Beyond Black Beauty and competition series Play-Doh Squished will both air on the AVOD’s free streaming service in 2023.

Amazon’s Freevee AVOD platform (formerly IMDB TV) has greenlit coming-of-age dramedy Beyond Black Beauty and unscripted series Play-Doh Squished (pictured above) as part of its content slate for 2023.

Based on the classic novel by Anna Sewell, Beyond Black Beauty follows aspiring Olympic equestrian Jolie Dumont as she struggles to adapt to a new lifestyle after moving to her mother’s childhood home in Baltimore. When she develops a bond with a spirited black horse named Beauty, Jolie begins to embrace life on the ranch, and ultimately discovers the true value of family and home.

Beyond Black Beauty is a co-pro between Amazon Studios, Toronto’s Sinking Ship Entertainment and Toronto-based Leif Films. It will be executive produced by Pilar Golden for Amazon Freevee; Leif Bristow and Agnes Bristow (A Tail of Love) for Leif Films; and J.J. Johnson (This is Daniel Cook) and Carla de Jong (Odd Squad: Mobile Unit) for Sinking Ship.

Meanwhile, Play-Doh Squished is a family competition series that Amazon Studios is co-producing with eOne, Hosted by exec producer Sarah Hyland, it will feature teams of families and friends participating in physical and creative challenges using Play-Doh products.

eOne’s Tara Long and Will Erb are exec producing with Hyland, and showrunners Allison Berkley (Earth to Ned) and Briana Vowels (American Ninja Warrior Junior) are already on board.

Amazon Freevee has also done a short-term licensing deal with Disney for several films, including The Post, Logan and Deadpool.
