French studio Gaumont has signed New York-based Spotlight Licensing to build a global merch program for CG-animated Netflix original series Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles, with an initial focus on categories such as toys, apparel and collectibles.

The action-adventure toon for six to 11s premiered on the streamer worldwide on April 28, and is about a teenage rabbit who teams up with a group of misfits on a quest to become true samurais. It’s based on Usagi Yojimbo, a long-running comic book series created by Stan Sakai that launched in the ’80s. Gaumont acquired the property in October 2017 from Sakai (who is exec producing the series), and a toy line was briefly put into production by Playmates Toys.

Netflix titles have been cropping up more often on the licensing landscape lately. Earlier this month, Cartoon Saloon announced plans for a global consumer products program for its upcoming Netflix movie My Father’s Dragon. And last year, the SVOD platform teamed up with Walmart to launch a digital storefront in the US with exclusive products inspired by shows such as CoComelon, Ada Twist, Scientist and Waffles and Mochi.
