Digital comic publisher WEBTOON has tapped Surge Licensing to serve as its exclusive North American licensing agent.
WEBTOON currently hosts upwards of 1.5 million comic series on its online platform, which has a global monthly user base of more than 82 million active readers, 15 million of which are based in the US, according to the company.
Its biggest breakout title for tweens to date is Miriam Bonastre Tur’s fantasy series Hooky (pictured), which has generated more than 99.4 million views and was published last year by HarperCollins as a graphic novel. But the company’s portfolio for younger readers also includes drama The Sound of Magic, thriller Sweet Home and superhero-driven series Supersonic Girl.
Surge will develop a brand licensing strategy for WEBTOON overall, as well as creating consumer products programs for its more popular titles spanning categories like apparel, toys and tabletop games.
The New York-based licensing agency has worked on several comic-based properties in the past, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Axe Cop and Street Sharks. And it signed TOMY International as the master toy partner for Diane Alber’s children’s book series A Little SPOT on May 3.
