Elmo, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch and more of Sesame’s Street’s family-friendly residents are set to take to the stage in the brand’s first off-Broadway musical.
Developed by Sesame Workshop and New York-based live entertainment company Rockefeller Productions, Sesame Street: The Musical will premiere this fall at Theater Row in Manhattan. This marks the brand’s first move back to live events since its North American touring show Sesame Street Live! ended in 2017.
Starting on September 8 and running through to November 27, the new musical production will feature a mix of classic and original songs created specifically for this engagement.
Rockefeller Productions CEO and creative director Jonathan Rockefeller will direct and produce Sesame Street: The Musical, and the plan is to announce creative staff, celebrity guests and narrative details at a later date.
Rockefeller Productions has launched several family shows for major kids brands over the years, including Disney’s Winnie the Pooh: The New Musical Stage Adaptation (2021), Paddington Gets in a Jam (2019) and The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show (2016). And it’s also currently developing immersive events such as Pixar Putt mini-golf and the interactive LEGO Awesome Exhibition.
As the world begins to open back up, many kidcos are working on new live and location-based experiences to engage families and fans with their favorite brands. Moonbug Entertainment has teamed up with Round Room Live to launch Little Baby Bum Live! Twinkle’s Talent Show this fall, and several productions that were put on pause by the pandemic, like WOW Exploration’s interactive live show WOWtopia, are preparing to relaunch later this year.
