Cartoon Network, HBO Max and Lion Forge Animation have teamed up to adapt a Dark Horse/YouNeek Studios graphic novel series called Iyanu: Child of Wonder into a same-name kids TV show.

The 2D-animated series will tell a superhero tale inspired by the history of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, following a teen girl who must discover the secrets behind her new powers and save her people from a curse threatening humanity. Lion Forge (Oscar-winning short Hair Love) is financing and overseeing production, but no details about the show’s format or release date have been announced yet.

Brandon Easton (Marvel’s Agent Carter) is leading the writers’ room, with Roye Okupe (the Nigerian creator of the comics) serving as executive producer, writer and director. For Lion Forge, head of production Saxton Moore is a supervising director on the project, with David Stewart II, Matt Heath and Carl Reed executive producing.

Warner Bros. Discovery was attracted to Ivanu’s African female hero, as well as its team of creators and mix of adventure and legend, said head of kids and family programming Amy Friedman in a release.

Kidscreen broke the news that an adaptation of the comic books was in the works when publisher YouNeek secured an investment from Impact Capital X. Former DreamWorks exec Doug Schwalbe teamed with YouNeek (through his new shingle The Co-Production Company) to bring the series to life.
