Nickelodeon launches global search for series

The broadcaster is calling out for kids live-action and animated pitches from BIPOC and other underrepresented communities, with plans to put three into development.

In collaboration with Rise Up Animation and Ghetto Film School, Nickelodeon has launched a new content accelerator that will send three concepts from underrepresented and early-stage creatives into development.

The company’s Content Accelerator Program is currently seeking submissions from these creator groups for live-action and animated concepts targeting any kids demo from preschool to teens. The application period is open until September 30 on Nick’s website, which includes a resource guide and pitching guidelines. Creators must be 21 years of age or older to participate.

After this window closes, a shortlist of entries will be selected to participate in a “pitch fest” day of virtual presentations to Nick commissioning execs. The winning pitch in each category—big kids animation, preschool animation and live action—will then move into a preliminary phase of development, with the three creators working virtually with Nick team members and a creative mentor to hone their concepts.

In addition to sourcing fresh content for its platforms, Nickelodeon says the mission of the Content Accelerator Program is to foster relationships between emerging talent and its development teams. This new initiative joins several other incubators in the company’s portfolio, including the returning Intergalactic Shorts Program that just kicked off again in June. Nick occasionally expands shorts from this accelerator into full-length series—2D-animated comedy Rock, Paper, Scissors, which debuted at Annecy this year, is a prime example.
