Mattel has renewed its licensing agreement with The Pokémon Company and will continue to produce MEGA brand toys and building sets featuring the anime juggernaut brand for multiple years.
MEGA’s Pokémon line for kids ages six and up first launched in 2018 and includes buildable characters, playsets, building blocks and sets featuring some of the brand’s most popular characters, such as Pikachu (pictured), Bulbasaur and Charmander.
Building sets are a strong revenue driver for Mattel at the moment. According to its latest Q3 financial report, released this week, gross billings in the action figures, building sets, games and other category were up by 6% to US$184.2 million, compared to US$174.4 million in Q3 2021.
The vehicle category also registered a third-quarter bump, with gross billings increasing by 22% to US$211.6 million from the same period last year.
The Pokémon franchise is also continuing to expand. In September, Netflix launched a new 2D-animated special called Pokémon: The Arceus Chronicles, based on the Pokémon Legends: Arceus video game that rolled out in January. And there is also a new unscripted series based on the Pokémon collectible card game in the works.
