Did Denmark just kick Mickey Mouse out of its house? It appears so.
Public broadcaster DR has announced a major kids strategy shift today, trading in its pipeline of Disney content for Danish and Nordic animated projects. The channel’s 30-year-old Disney Fun programming block will be replaced on DR1 with a new one-hour block called FridayTamTam. And because it’s no longer tied to a rights deal, the block’s content will also be offered on DR’s SVOD platform, DRTV.
In development for FridayTamTam are several new Danish projects, including Ja Films’ 2D-animated adventure series Monster Loving Maniacs (pictured); Sparre Productions’ CG-animated comedy Karla’s Fantastical Class; and a 2D-animated fantasy series called Høj from Copenhagen Bombay. The block will also feature classic cartoons such as Tom & Jerry.
This move is in line with DR’s efforts to develop more homegrown kids production talent. In August, the broadcaster signed a three-year partnership with Denmark’s Film Talent Foundation, Film Workshops and Manuscript School for Children’s Fiction to develop a new animation class. The Series School with DR Ultra will focus on improving the skills of 20 people who want to create live-action and animated content for children ages nine to 14.
