Apple TV+ has renewed The Jim Henson Company’s live-action series Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock for a second season.
The 13 x 30-minute series for kids ages six and up is a reboot of ’80s classic Fraggle Rock, produced by LA-based New Regency in association with Henson. Characters from the original series return once more to sing and dance about friendship in their cave-dwelling community.
Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford are executive producers on the series, alongside John Tartaglia (Splash and Bubbles) and New Regency’s Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer. Matt Fusfeld and Alex Cuthbertson (New Girl, Community) are showrunning, and Chris Plourde (Muppets Tonight) is on board as a producer.
This reboot has been a success for Apple TV+, which revived the IP in 2020 with Fraggle Rock: Rock On!, showcasing the Fraggles having fun on video calls. This pandemic-era production featured three- to five-minute episodes filmed entirely on iPhone 11s from the homes of its crew. Apple subsequently partnered with Henson to retool the full series, which premiered earlier this year on the streamer. It won an Emmy last week for Art Direction/Set Decoration at the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards.
Apple and Henson seem to have a productive partnership on the go, with two additional series in the works: Harriet the Spy, the first animated adaptation of the iconic children’s novel; and Slumberkins, a 2D-animated/puppetry hybrid series for preschoolers.
