Former Disney & Brown Bag staffer joins Little Moon Animation

EXCLUSIVE: David McCamley, who previously worked as a visual development director at Brown Bag Films, is joining the studio behind Fia’s Fairies as its first creative director.

Dublin’s Little Moon Animation has hired longtime Brown Bag Films alum David McCamley as its first-ever creative director. Coming off of 16 years at Brown Bag, McCamley starts his new gig on May 2 and is charged with overseeing and expanding the studio’s development slate.

Founded in 2019, Little Moon delivered CG-animated preschool series Fia’s Fairies (26 x five minutes) to commissioning broadcaster RTEjr in February. The studio is also developing an app based on the show called Fairy Island-Language Explorers that will endeavor to teach kids Irish.

McCamley previously worked as a director of visual development at Brown Bag, where he racked up producer and director credits on shows such as Eva the Owlet for Apple TV+; Ada Twist, Scientist for Netflix; and Peter Rabbit for Nick Jr. But his career in animation stretches back to the mid-’80s and includes a stint at Disney, where he worked on features including Atlantis, The Lost Empire and The Lion King.

Little Moon is gearing up on a handful of new series and specials, and wants to expand its slate even further, says CEO Vanessa Robinson. It’s currently producing The Scavengers, which will be ready to air on RTEjr in August 2024. A sci-fi adventure for kids ages eight to 12, this original series (20 x 11 minutes) follows a 13-year-old scavenger, his robot friend and a diligent cadet as they try to figure out how to survive in Ireland following a climate disaster.

The studio also has a trio of new projects in development—a 52 x five-minute preschool series called Littlest Witches, and two 30-minute holiday specials (one for Halloween and one for Christmas) that have both received development funding from Screen Ireland. The Christmas special, Tales From The Wagon, is a co-pro with Spring Pictures UK that’s based on stories from author Richard O’Neill. The Halloween special is called EmPowered, and autistic writer Jody O’Neill (What I (Don’t) Know About Autism) and Dublin-based Carol Walsh (Goat Girl) are penning the script.

Robinson says she will join McCamley and chief creative officer Eoghan Garvey at Annecy in June to pitch Little Moon’s projects and develop the studio’s profile in the global marketplace.
