As part of an ongoing Disney restructuring, iconic animation studio Pixar has let go of 75 staffers in its first large-scale layoffs since 2013.
Among those whose roles have been eliminated are two key execs behind Lightyear (2022, pictured), which grossed just US$226 million globally. Director Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman had both been with Pixar since the ’90s. Michael Agulnek, VP of worldwide publicity, has also been let go.
These cuts are part of a broader plan to eliminate 7,000 jobs across Disney’s operations. With around 1,200 employees, Pixar has created some of the media company’s most successful and critically acclaimed animated film franchises, including Toy Story, The Incredibles and Cars. Its latest feature, Elemental, is due out in theaters on June 16.
Lightyear fell significantly short of expectations, earning an estimated US$226 million in ticket sales against a US$200-million budget. By pre-pandemic comparison, 2019’s Toy Story 4 had a similar budget and grossed more than US$1 billion worldwide.
